| WiredKids Need Your Help In January, as part of a UNESCO program to make Internet safe for children, the WiredKids.org web site will be launched. It is a volunteer effort being endorsed by a wide range of national organizations. I have volunteered (been volunteered There are three immediate initiatives that I think will be of interest to some of you and for which I would be greatful for your participation. I'll briefly describe them. 1) Many of you here represent organization that have great services for teachers, parents, and students. We want to make people aware of you. What we would like to do at WiredKids is to provide parents and teachers with a substantial base of mini-content that leads back additional quality content material on your sites. What that content is, how much you provide, and where it links back to your site is up to you. However, if you have services or products for sale, it would not be appropriate to link back to those specific pages.) The content need not be exclusive to the WiredKids site. In other words, it can be a mirror of something that already exists on your site. Think of it as a way of introducing parents and teachers who have not visited your site to quality content you provide. It might be an article, a list of upcoming activities, an introduction/overview of your site, etc. You can send the pages to me as email attachments, or if they already exist you can just send me the URLs to grab. Please feel free to include graphics and logos. A few sentences about your organization would also be appreciated. The above is just a guideline and if you have other ideas, please voice them. 2) Many of you individual teachers or schools have great projects underway that would make wonderful models for others to follow. We have a section called Bragging Rights where we want to tell your story. If you have a success story that you would like to share, please send it to me. Linking and content at the WiredKids site would depend on the nature of your project. For example, if you have a web site with full details, you might provide your basic story and we would like to your site. If you simply have a lesson you do with your class and it isn't on the web, you can post it for others to use. 3) This last item is more in the nature of a heads up. We will be creating a Cyberzine for kids, by kids. The idea will be to develop a national model to improve writing skills and to document the impact of technology on the process. This initiative will begin in my school district. Once the kinks are worked out and the model is ready to disseminate, I will provide more details here.
