| Internet Chat Dead At The Age Of 16 Chat, aged 16 (64 in Internet years), died quietly this past weekend surrounded by close friends, total strangers, and emoticons. Born in the eighties and formally known as Internet Relay Chat (IRC), Chat was developed by Jarkko Oikarinen in Finland, and was originally intended as a better substitute for "talk" on his bulletin board. Even at a young age, Chat attracted immense notoriety and was instrumental in the popularization of the Internet in the early nineties. Despite his ramblings and wordiness with friends and strangers alike, no one could say a bad word to his face. Chat is survived by his loving heir-apparent, Voice over IP. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked mourners to pay their respects at www.chatisdead.com. The site has been established to inform people of this tragic loss, as well as to help them through their grieving. Private funeral services will take place this summer.
